My Knees Are Popping
You bend down and hear it. You stand up and hear it. You think to yourself “Oh, my knees are popping again.”
Is it dangerous? Is it indicating a problem you should have a doctor look at?
If you experience pain while climbing steps, it could be an early sign of knee osteoarthritis. Although this tends to appear in people over 40, if you are very active or had a serious knee injury when you were younger, you could show signs of it now.

* Heed warning signs. At the first sound of crunching in your joints, talk to your doctor, says Robert Lahita, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Chances are, you have loose cartilage, an early sign of osteoarthritis. Reduce the damage with an anti-inflammatory.
* Grease your joints. Pop 1,500 milligrams daily of an over-the-counter supplement that contains glucosamine and chondroitin. Though docs aren’t sure why it works, it’s accepted as the medical version of the Tin Man’s oilcan, treating and preventing creaks.
* Hit the gym. Running and weight lifting help prevent inflammation and lubricate the joints–unless you’re coming off a joint injury. Increased stress on damaged joints can cause posttraumatic arthritis, so men with torn-cartilage injuries should opt for swimming.
* Lose the flab. A recent study found that 32 percent of overweight adults and 43 percent of obese adults have arthritis. “If you’re fat and inactive and have any genetic predisposition for arthritis, you’re going to develop it,” Dr. Lahita says.
