Free Weights or Smith Machine?

Years ago I would only squat with the Smith Machine.  Performing squats with a barbell and weights was intimidating.  I was concerned about hurting my back, my knees, falling over, and basically looking foolish.  So, I did squats on the Smith Machine for a long time.  Then when I became more serious about exercise and wanted to improve my muscle tone, I decided to try free weight squats.  Why?  There are several reasons.
